Confused about color? The Decorating Coach will coordinate a plan

Article by Tinka Dabi

Decorating decisions can be confusing, especially when it comes to selecting colors. Do they coordinate or clash? Sooth or excite? Whether freshening the whole house with paint or simply redoing a single room, choosing the correct colors and coordinating furnishings and accessories can be challenging.

That’s where Meshell Lane, The Decorating Coach can help. Meshell has an expert eye for color and a flair for harmony. She can assist with design plans and selection of new furniture and accessories. Or, she can re-arrange existing furnishings to create a new look and add pizzazz to a home.

Meshell is also an expert when it comes to matting, framing and arranging artwork or family photographs. In fact, she is part of Art Decor Portraits, a local collaborative that creates Art Décor Portraits, one-of-a-kind art pieces from digital images.

As The Decorating Coach, Meshell assists with all the details involved in design. She is a professional who can validate ideas and provide direction. She is a valuable resource for finding decorative items and can serve as a personal shopper for furniture and accessories. She is able to create an overall plan for a project and carry it out according to budget. Or, she can provide a step-by-step list for the do-it-yourselfer.

She prides herself on being able to stretch decorating dollars and save clients money on all their projects.

“I enjoy working with clients and give them as much or as little help as they desire,” she says.

As a partner in the company called Art Décor Portraits, Meshell lends her design and artistic expertise to create a unique line of artwork for the home. In addition to Meshell, the group includes photographer Tim Gillespie and artist Sea Miller, both of El Dorado Hills.

The trio employs a special method to create original Old World fresco style portraits from professional photographs. The artwork includes a consultation in the home, a photo session with the subject or person, and artistic hand embellishment with archival materials.

It’s a process that blends the technology of photography and digital imagery with traditional artistic techniques. The result is a custom portrait piece that is specially designed for the family, the home and the individual décor.

Meshell began her decorating career doing merchandising and window displays. She served as an assistant designer for a Sacramento area interior design firm, assisting with residential clients and helping to furnish and decorate model homes in Lincoln and Roseville for a major builder. Some of her ideas used in the models were adapted by several homebuyers.

“Meshell is known for her creativity and her enthusiasm for all her projects. She loves to shop, share bargains and create beautiful and very clever vignettes in homes,” said an associate. “She is a pleasure to work with.”

Meshell’s fees are competitive. For $100 an hour, her services include color consultations, custom artwork, personal shopping, accessorizing assistance, window and wall treatments, design plans, furniture selection, space planning, home staging or decorating for parties and special events.

As an added bonus, she gives clients a complimentary project planner suitable for organizing fabric swatches, color chips, flooring samples and all the details involved in decorating. It also includes Meshell’s personal project plan detailing her suggestions and resources.
